Hair loss, more often than not, also brings about the loss of self-confidence.  Most people can get too distressed about losing their hair that it is inevitable for them to appear as unattractive as they feel to other people.

Hair loss can be an inescapable condition if it is in your genes and your family has a history of it.  The genetic condition is something that cannot be helped. But hair loss can also be experienced by people who are not genetically predisposed to developing it.

There are many other factors that may contribute to hair loss. Aside from knowing your family history, you should also know the symptoms of the condition.  The first tell tale sign of hair loss is the number of hair strands that you lose in a day.

An average of 100 strands of hair lost per day is normal, according to experts.  Natural hair loss occurs in order for new and healthier hair to grow.  New hair growth usually occurs every 12 weeks.  However, if you are losing signinficantly more than 100 strands a day, then you may be suffering from a hair loss condition.

Here are some of the most common causes of hair loss.  It is always better to consult your doctor if you think that you have a hair loss condition.  Your doctor will be better equipped to diagnose your condition and suggest the most effective treatments based on your specific needs.

DISEASES.  Certain medical conditions, especially those that weaken the immune system, like lupus, cancer, and thyroid disorders, cause hair loss.

MEDICATIONS.  Some medications have hair loss as one of its side effects.  Diet pills like isotretinoin and lithium, which contain amphetamines,  cause hair loss especially among teens.  Hormonal changes which are the result of medications, like birth control pills, also result in hair loss.  Invasive drug treatments, like cancer drugs, drugs that treat gout, depression, arthritis, and heart problems may also set off the condition.

POOR NUTRITION.  Proteins and iron are very important components of strong and healthy hair.  People who have insufficient protein and iron in their diet become more prone to hair loss.  Hair loss as a result of improper nutrition is occurs more commonly among women.  This is largely because women are more fussy about their diets and are more likely to have eating disorders compared to men.  A proper diet is very important to have a sufficient supply of nutrients, which in turn, sustains healthy hair growth, among many other health benefits.

MEDICAL TREATMENTS.  Invasive medical treatments, like chemotherapy and radiation therapy, weaken the immune system, and eventually lead to hair loss.  These treatments may even lead to permanent hair loss, known as alopecia.

Other factors that contribute to hair loss include hormonal changes due to pregnancy, frequent hair treatments and hairstyle changes, scalp infection, “trichotillomania” or hair-pulling disorder, and disruption of the hair-growth cycle.
